The mission of the sanctuary is mainly oriented towards welcoming pilgrims to whom varied spiritual services are provided: apart from celebrating mass four times daily, the priests appointed to Fourvière (the chaplains) are available to give the sacrament of reconciliation for eight hours every day, to welcome and talk with the pilgrims, to organise and animate prayer times with the help of the numerous volunteers who, in one way or another, offer their time to the sanctuary. The chaplains also prepare and animate catechesis events or debates such as the “mardis de Fourvière” (The sanctuary Our Lady of Fourvière does not have a parish mission; no weddings, baptisms or funerals are celebrated there).
